Pond Water Treatments

Ponds whether they are located in the garden or at the backyard of your home add a serene look and tranquil atmosphere to your home, but they prove anathema when you do not treat water for long or do not replace it with fresh water. Improper care in pond water treatments lead to proliferation of algae, fungus and bugs in the water. Too much buildup of algae can kill the wild life and cause a terrible stench in the pond. However, if pond water treatment methods are regularly applied, you can continue enjoying serenity and tranquility in the atmosphere of you home. But, the question is how to start pond water treatments.

The first procedure is to do treatment through filtration. You can have garden ponds filtration system installed in you pond that treat the water from toxic chemicals on continuous basis. It is specifically important for koi fish ponds where metabolisms of fish create several toxic materials. Some biological filters available in the market are used with UV lights that prove effective for pond water treatments. The size of the filter must be according to the size of the pond and number of fish, frogs and turtles that you house in your pond. A biological filter should be preferred over other filters in that it is designed to handle large volumes of pond water at the same time.

The second process of pond water treatments is about the purification of water of your pond for chlorine. Generally, gardeners use kits to remove chlorine from the water and these kits are available in several varieties. You are just to fill the pond and let the water go down within a week. Now test its pH level and if it is higher than 7, you can add plants and fish to live in it.

The third process of pond water treatments relate to algae control in the water. Algae proliferate wherever water is present. It can be simply done through neutralization of pH level of the pond and algae will stop growing. You can add chemicals from your kit to stop growth of excessive algae. However, if you have already installed a filter with UV, it can easily kill algae and you can recycle green water to make algae disappear permanently.

The fourth process of pond water treatments involved collection of dead leaves from the surface. When your pond is overpopulated with plants, the leaves drop on the water surface and decompose in the water. They create foul odor and makes water unfit for wild life like fish and birds. You can treat this water in two ways. The first is to use chemicals and second is to use bio filter. However, you can also use skimmers in the beginning when leaves are falling. This is the best pond water treatment procedure.

Another method for pond water treatments is the use of barley straw.  It is a safe, natural deterrent to green water. It stops algae from growing rapidly, and helps in keeping the water fresh. You can purchase it from any garden and pond supply store. Barley straws are also available in pellets through which you can extract iodine that is more effective in pond water treatments.
